There’s a difference between grilling, bbq-ing and smoking. I’m not going to go into all that, cause it would take pages to explain it all and I’m a lazy gal. lol. Everybody has their favorite way to do it. Summer sausages, veggies, hot dogs, baked potatoes, and what to sprinkle on them. So many stuff to marinade them in. Lots of choices. Have fun shopping for your new grill…

Indian Tacos…yum

I love Indian Tacos. Luckily, I live in a area with a lot of Natives, which means theOT local indian clinic sometimes has a fundraiser…making indian tacos. In Nette’s old hometown the casino has a little cafe that makes em. I was excited when we got into town, a couple days ago, but then my heart was broken when we passed by and it was closed up. I was gonna try to sweet talk them into making an indian taco lunch break but they were closed. This dish is NOT healthy, which is why I don’t have it every day.

Indian Tacos

A pot of beans, not drained. Most authentic is pinto beans and you can use canned

6-10 cups of self rising flour (look at the biscuit recipe on pkg and see if it calls for baking powder. No baking powder is self rising flour)

Parmesan Cheese 1/2 cup, optional

Buttermilk, 1/2 gallon

Mix flour and cheese into large bowl. You can use a little or a lot of cheese, according to you preferences. Slowly add the buttermilk until you have a ball of dough. Sprinkle some flour on the sides of the bowl, kneading the dough. When the dough has the consistancy of play-dough, let it sit for 10-20 minutes. In a deep pot, pour at least 3 inches deep, vegetable oil and heat to boiling hot on medium heat. Pinch a golf ball to tennis ball sized ball of dough. Roll ball in flour. Its easier to pour extra flour in bowl. Flatten the ball but not too much or you’ll get a tortilla. Make sure to drag the flat but thicker bread thru the flour. Drop a tiny piece of bread into the hot grease to test the grease. The bread should drop to the bottom of pot then slowly rise to the top to start frying. Do not move from the frying bread for you will have to turn the bread in your pot so it will brown on both sides. It doesn’t take long for bread to brown so keep an eye on your bread. Drain on paper towels. Some like to sprinkle salt on the bread and eat it plain. Once the bread is done, put one on a plate and pile on the toppings. Lettuce, tomatoes, various cheeses, cooked hamburger meat (some add the meat to the beans) and add the beans. Its simple but good. Oh so good.

Fruit Bowls

I eat a lot of oranges/mandarins and I need a bowl for them. I bought this nice blue bowl but its too small. I’m think my next bowl will be oblong and bigger. Here’s a long list of em and somehow I’ve got the pare them down to just one. Oh, boy.

A Few Days…

I took a few days off to deal with some stuff. Me and Christine are moving #2 sister, Nette, in with us. We are driving her four hrs away to pack up rest of her stuff then coming back home. But the night before, we get a call from youngest sister, say that our mom is not looking good and she complains that the doctor’s won’t tell her much. We don’t panic though since she has been known to stir us up but I make a statement, “if she is lying, I’m goin to beat her ass!” which stirs up the family. Mention of taping or watch said beat down is flitting thru the family. She can lie all she wants but don’t mess with our mama. Half way up to their home, we get a phone call from Mom’s dr, wanting to start dialysis. She is unresponsive and needs dialysis to remove toxins in her body. Its not the first time dealing with dialysis, so we know what it entails. We are nervously in a holding pattern, hoping her 2nd or 3rd dialysis treatment will make her clearheaded enough to know that we are there.

Nette is driving Christine’s suv and Christine is driving the u-haul van. I am a passenger in the suv and Eddi is riding with his mama, saying he won’t fall asleep. I know its bull crap but I let it go. Hour and half later, we stop for bathroom break and Christine states that I’m moving to the van cause Eddi is SLEEPING! lol His sleeping is making her sleepy. He only played on his game for about ten minutes before dropping off. We get to town and call hopsital and find out that they have already begun dialysis on Mom.

Getting to the house and open it up and which point Nette is mad. Apparently she paid youngest sister to clean out the furniture so all we would have to move is the plastic tubs of stuff. She took a few pieces to sell but left most of it. Its too hot in the house for me and Nette so its all left for Eddi and Christine. We take turns bribing Eddi and I bug him about drinking lots of water since its very hot/humid outside. There are 2 tv in the house but Nette don’t want them but she doesn’t want Ew to sell them either. So I look at Eddi and tell him to go in and break them. He brightens, we usually yell if he tries to break stuff. Christine and Nette nod and so he trots into the house. He finds Nette’s old cane and uses it to break the tv’s.

We go back to hospital to visit mom. We are in her room ten minutes before they bring her back. She is unresponsive but has leg twitches and its real hard to see her like that. We are hopeful though because Christine was exactly like this and after the 2nd treatment she recovered. She starts snoring so that gives us hope. We will never stop hoping. We got back home around midnight. I slept the whole next day, recovering from the heat, since I don’t notice the heat. Ever since the “stroke” I get cold alot so I enjoy the heat. I don’t notice how hot the heat is and I don’t sweat that much. That means I don’t know when to come in out of the heat. I could easily have heat stroke so I watch it. I ration my heat exposure so I won’t scare anyone. Back to the subject, all 3 sisters in one house with Eddi. Renee comes over every day with kiddo so its a houseful and always noisy. I like it. Thats all folks… for now. Darlene

I like to cook but only simple stuff. I am no gourmet, no flashy “lay oregano on top to give it more flair” type. I am a very picky eater so I tend to tweak recipes to suit me. #3 sister, Christine, tends to do most of the cooking now. I used to do most of the cooking but gradually Christine has taken over that job and I let her.

I love going to garage sales and finding old cookbooks for only a dollar. but with this corona virus thang going on, not a lot of folks are putting on garage sales. I like them in the 50’s-60’s but if you can find them older, its a treasure.

I buy new ones too because I know that Christine bought an instapot and loves the thing. Microwave meals are interesting. I get excited for the little spiral notebook kinds, you know the ones that churches put out to fund raise. I have a cousin who loves anything pioneer woman. The really big ones I can usually find at antique stores. You wouldn’t believe a 14 year old nerd/heathen would go to an antique store with us but he will. Eagerly, in fact. He loves the copper toys while we look at everything. We have learned over the years to look in the back of the store for the books. Plain american food is what I like. But I do like to buy others, especially chinese since they all love chinese dishes.

I’m not into garnishing my food since 5 seconds after you put food in front of their faces, they start shoveling it in. We recently moved #2 sister in, various health problems, plus Renee, (my niece, who lives with boyfriend but comes over most days) and her 3 kids, that makes 8 or so people in the house that eat alot. Yep, I am the kind of diabetic that has to eat several times a day plus a big meal for supper. I snack all thru the day to keep the sugar high enough. A 20 oz Pepsi usually takes me 2 days to finish. I try to limit my caffeine since it tends to make me sleepy. Yep, I have a small allergy to caffeine, I can’t even have coffee. I love plain ol water, although I will at times at flavor packets to it.

My dream library would be filled with cookbooks of all kinds. I still go thru the book sections at the local Wal-Mart to just look at all the nice new cookbooks that I need to buy when I win the lottery. lol

I will root around my amazon and ebay stuff to see if I have any interesting books. I usually have a list of books I want but that are not in my budget right now. I will add them later…keep checking back.

About Me

I am Darlene, aka, Whispers. I am a 50 yr old chubby, Native American gal with a whispering voice that breathes like Darth Vader.(Darth Darlene, if you will) I like lots of things and we are going to explore them. I hate drama, will avoid people that stir it up. I have 4 sisters, all younger than me. I have no children but I help my sister raise her daughter (now 21) and son, (now 14, snot nosed heathen), both of whom are taller than me. I may be the oldest but I am the shortest. (gah) My niece has been living with boyfriend for almost a year, has two adorable step-kids (boy and girl) and her first child, a son (Jae) who is 7 months. He is the first grandchild that my sister has blood but we claim all three.

I love cookbooks but stopped cooking for the most part. I will post recipes when I get time. My niece had taken up gardening. My nephew loves his games. I like to write. I am a very laid back person. I find people are generally stupid and entertaining. I love to laugh and find humor in most anything. I don’t smoke, not even the happy weed, ( it smells like Christmas) or drink. I don’t judge those who do, we all make our own choices. We, I live with my sister and her son, have 2 bearded dragons and you will get to see the cutie pies some time in the future.

I used to be warm blooded but 2 years ago, I had a mini stroke-like thingy thang and lost speech for only 2 days so now I get cold easy. Since its started getting hot, I go out and sun outside to get warmed up and Eddi tells everyone that I am part lizard. We take the lizards everywhere and no, they are not iguanas.

I am a 3rd generation type 2 diabetic and all of us sisters also struggle with high blood pressure. I am lucky, I don’t have to take insulin, just a little pill, not metformin, for mine. I can’t even watch mu sisters inject themselves. Eww, needles.
